Letter from The President - Neil Swanson
I have both the honor and also a welcome challenge to keep the momentum alive on behalf of the DDBC in 2012. The economic climate continued to force many tough decisions this past year; however the entire membership rallied around on what we did offer to produce a banner year.
We were able to give out 10 scholarships this past November. It was a very proud event for the Council. I am sure it was also a proud moment for their presenter, Dennis McIntyre of Stater Bros. Dennis was instrumental in supporting the council in helping us raise over $75,000 at our Dinner Meeting in July. It is joint challenge to keep that level of support in 2012!
It is our collective direction & commitment to provide VALUE to our membership in every event or program we propose. In this business climate it is especially important to maintain the networking opportunities with the individuals that are this industry, but what is Value? What is the definition?
- VALUE- noun, verb, -ued, -u•ing. noun
1. relative worth, merit, or importance: This is the Value of our meetings and events.
2. monetary or material worth, as in commerce or trade: The material worth of our Organization is the platform for Networking we provide for the Retailers & Suppliers.
3. the worth of something in terms of the amount of other things for which it can be exchanged or in terms of some medium of exchange. Again the forum for fostering creative interchange for our membership.
4. equivalent worth or return in money, material, services, etc.: to give value for value received. We will be measured by this in the upcoming months and years. Have we succeeded? 5. estimated or assigned worth; valuation. Our board hopes that we receive honest feedback on whether we are meeting our goals to provide VALUE!
Each of these definitions gives our Council direction in 2012!
I would like to take a moment to thank the 2011 Board members who have just finished their tenure. I am sure they will stay active in the council. I would also like to thank those board members that have preceded them. They are the ones that have kept this organization going for 51 years and their continued support and the support of the colleagues is key!
Our new board has a great diverse mixture of veterans and eager new members. I feel that creates a nice blended balance. I can already see that they are willing to try newer approaches to keep our programs relevant. We want the Deli Dairy Bakery Council events to be memorable. That is our collective goal in 2012.
